“…singing belongs to one who loves…”

Augustine long ago observed that,

“he that sings praise, not only sings, but also loves him of whom he sings…”

We pray that our children grow to love God more and more.  As we pray for them, we teach them to sing, and we joyfully sing with them.  This week during Sunday School, our children learned two songs to help them grow in love for God.

The first is a simple song with motions by which our 3 & 4 year old class learned part of the SS gospel text (Luke 4:16-21):

“Jesus came…to heal the broken-hearted, to set the captives free, to make the blind see…”

Second was the hymn “I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light,” which you can find in our hymnal (#490).  What truer words can we teach our children?

I’m looking for the coming of Christ.

I want to be with Jesus.

When we have run with patience the race,

we shall know the joy of Jesus…

Each week, we end Sunday School by singing together.  Come join us!  Do you have favorite songs of the Church that you sing at home?  Please share in the comments.
